Where To Buy Birds for Dog Training

If you are training a bird dog, you have to figure out where to buy birds for dog training.  And that ain’t easy.  Here are a few ideas to get you headed in the right direction.

Other Trainers

The best place to find out where to buy birds for dog training is probably from other trainers.  When you ask other professionals where to buy birds for dog training, you will get referrals and recommendations.  They will tell you who has healthy birds, or who charges too much, or whose birds are poorly shipped.  If you’re lucky, they will also share tips and techniques and professional information with you.

Game Bird Raiser’s Association

If your state has a Game Bird Raiser’s Association, they may be able to tell you where to buy birds for dog training.  Not all of their members will sell you birds for dog training, but they might tell you who will.  Game Bird Raiser’s Association members may also be able to tell you what regulations apply to using game birds for dog training in your state.

Hunter’s Association

Your state Hunter’s Association might be able to tell you where to buy birds for dog training.  They may have a list of game bird raisers who are happy to sell to hunters and dog trainers.

The Internet

You might be able to find out where to buy game birds on that source of all information, the internet.  The internet isn’t the best way to find birds, though, and you might want to save it for your last resort.  You’ll find game bird raisers, but you have to check everything out for yourself, including references from other bird dog trainers.

Once you’ve found a good source for training birds, cultivate that source.  Be very nice to them and treat them well.  It’s just too hard to find out where to buy birds for dog training to risk losing a good source.
